The Presidential Debate between Bush and Kerry I
With election closing in
faster then a New York winter cold it was two candidates on fire that
occupied the TV debate this evening from Arizona, and it might have
been even harder to tell who won the debate this time then the first.
First of all Bush did a
much better job in wording himself and his opinions though most of
his regular jokes didn’t amuse the moderator or the people
present in the hall for that matter, maybe he should have left those
for his true supporters and his white house staff - having said that,
he did a pretty knock up job in the debate this time.
The problem really starts
when you start listening closer to the question actually asked and
the what he answers, you’ll notice how he avoid many of the
questions, gives vague answers, or starts talking about something
else all together.
Bush and Kerry also
seem to have different opinions on who the middle class or average
American is, as Bush kept insisting the tax cut benefited the middle
class while Kerry kept saying how the tax cut only benefited the
richest few. I think we can agree that at best only the upper middle
class has seen marginal effect of the tax cut.
As for foreign policy what
Bush says makes perfectly sense if you agree or swallow the
assumption and assertion he makes on the following realities: 1)that
there was a direct link between Iraq and terrorism and that Iraq
posted a present danger to the national security at the time the
president decided to go to war. 2) That the world and America in
particular is a safer place then it where before 3) That you can use
military force to dictate freedom upon rough nations. Unfortunaly
this reality are not shared by many Citizens, or the world at large
for that matter.
Kerry answered the
questions well and even offered glimpse of humour and self irony. On
many questions he gave a more profound answer to questions then the
president. He even managed to a large extend to explain how the
political process works and why he voted as he did.
If I can offer one
particular thing that wasn’t to good on Kerry’s tactic it
must be on how he always mentioned negative things about the current
administration. Now we all know that Bush supporters have backed
dirty campaigns on Kerry, but you don’t here it from Bushes
mouth which is of a clever psychological trick.
Also at times Kerry sound
maybe a little bit to much as a politician. Everyone understands that
none of the candidate can keep half of what they promise, or in Bush
case has done half of the things he take credit for, so repeating
such things are somewhat like insulting the listener.
Kerry is a brilliant
minded man with a strong faith and capable of firm leadership, and if
your somewhere in centre on the political scale you have to ask
yourself who would you have voted for regardless of the 9/11 and the
what followed. Yes, Bush managed the proceeding weeks after the
tragic event, but is that enough to be re-elected? - especial given
how things have developed. And even if you say yes, do you really
want to risk the hard right turn you risk with the current
administration?
To conclude the
debate I would say both Kerry and Bush has presented themselves at
their best and whichever your preference are the most important thing
is that you vote! Cause as it stands now after three debates it’s
close to a tie.
