I was one of those who hailed Quentin Tarantino and could not stop
praising the first installment of Kill Bill, which was by any
standard a fantastically well directed, edited, and designed movie
with a great cast – needless to say the pressure was on for the
second movie to deliver the same standards the first one set. But did
it? Since it's release and until now that I'm primary reviewing the
DVD I haven't really been able to make up my mind on that account.
First of all the movie is so completely different from the first
one that you bound to get disappointed at first if you expected more
of the same – no, doubt Quentin has done a struck of brilliance
film-making again, it's pretty genius how he plays with the
conventional perception of how a story is told and how a movie should
be made – having said that, that don't necessarily mean a movie
is good or great. Having gotten over the first disappointments I
watch this movie again and began to see just how brilliant it is at
points.
Where the first was filled with action and extravaganza, designer
suits, and chic people this one is down to earth filthy and filled
with emotions damaged life's and a hole lot of psychological insight
to the main characters Bill and Black Mamba. Michael Madsen delivers
maybe the performance of his life as the reflecting brother of bill,
and there's wonderful anti-climax near the end. Also worh mentioning
is a relatively short scene with an old pimp who happens to be one of
Bill's father figures.
As I said in the beginning once you get past the slight
disappointment because the movie is so different from the first one,
you'll be able to enjoy it for what it is – a psychological
drama, with a few short action sequences. Mind it have a few flaws
even on those premises and it feels a little bit like Quentin
slacked a little on the direction, but all in all its good.
Now for the extra material of the Kill
Bill. Vol. 2 DVD, there's really easy to describe it, it is none
existing – there's one lame live song performance from the
movies opening night, ant that's about it, a shame really –
even as I'm pretty sure a special box or two are on the way, I will
guess one special of vol 2. and one super special of vol 1 and 2
combined. Verdict 8/10 (extras 2/10)
